Fwd: Streams in Alaska

Quiet Time with God

"And Isaac went out to meditate in the fields at eventide" (Gen. 24:63).

We should be better Christians if we were more alone; we should do more if we attempted less, and spent more time in retirement, and quiet waiting upon God. The world is too much with us; we are afflicted with the idea that we are doing nothing unless we are fussily running to and fro; we do not believe in "the calm retreat, the silent shade." As a people, we are of a very practical turn of mind; "we believe," as someone has said, "in having all our irons in the fire, and consider the time not spent between the anvil and the fire as lost, or much the same as lost." Yet no time is more profitably spent than that which is set apart for quiet musing, for talking with God, for looking up to Heaven. We cannot have too many of these open spaces in life, hours in which the soul is left accessible to any sweet thought or influence it may please God to send. "Reverie," it has been said, "is the Sunday of the mind." Let us often in these days give our mind a "Sunday," in which it will do no manner of work but simply lie still, and look upward, and spread itself out before the Lord like Gideon's fleece, to be soaked and moistened with the dews of Heaven. Let there be intervals when we shall do nothing, think nothing, plan nothing, but just lay ourselves on the green lap of nature and "rest awhile."

Time so spent is not lost time. The fisherman cannot be said to be losing time when he is mending his nets, nor the mower when he takes a few minutes to sharpen his scythe at the top of the ridge. City men cannot do better than follow the example of Isaac, and, as often as they can, get away from the fret and fever of life into fields. Wearied with the heat and din, the noise and bustle, communion with nature is very grateful; it will have a calming, healing influence. A walk through the fields, a saunter by the seashore or across the daisy-sprinkled meadows, will purge your life from sordidness, and make the heart beat with new joy and hope.

VBS final day

Our last day of VBS went great yesterday with one exception, I didn't get any pictures of it on my phone.  So I'll have to post them later.  We'll miss these guys but are also looking forward to coming home.  There were several at the parent share program that do not go to church.  Pastor Mark (Milligan) took the opportunity to talk about Jesus and invite all to Moose Pass Community Church.

Work

These guys worked HARD this week.  So proud of our team and their willingness to contribute to Gods work.

Thursday VBS: music music music

I can't believe how musically gifted these kids are!  Parent share program is tomorrow night.  Looking forward to it.  Pray that Jesus would be lifted up and that some will come to know Him through this.

Wednesday VBS

Another great day at VBS, 22 kids.  We danced, we sang, we learned, we crafted, lots of fun!

Jennifer is doing great Bible stories, Jo Ann is leading crafts, Mark and Kathy are taking wonderful care of the little ones, Cassie is the best VBS leader ever and I... am just glad to be here.

Today

Great day yesterday.  Church, then set up for VBS, then a dinner with the church.  Bill deep fried some halibut, oh my...  Anyway, today we'll finish VBS set up as the construction team gets to work at the new church.  We're very happy to see that there has been so much done on the church since we were here last year.  This week it looks like the construction team will be finishing up some sheetrock mud and trim, then probably even get to painting.  These people are delightful, a joy to be around.  By "these people" I mean the folks of Moose Pass and this incredible team from Alabama that God has assembled.  Can't wait to see what He has in store for us!

Doug & Ben

Got a little sidetracked while the rest of us were working diligently.  Then they almost whacked Jo Ann in the head with the frisbee.  But we forgave them :-)

Worshiping at church.  Right now they're meeting in the school gym until construction is complete on the new building.

Music

Can't describe how awesome the music is.  Especially for such a small community.

I am in Alaska!!

We are here

In anchorage.  Staying at calvary Baptist church in anchorage.  Tomorrow morning we get up and head to moose pass.  We're tired and hungry and waiting on delivery pizza.  It's 11:35 Alaska time, 2:35am, ouch :-)
